🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟 Team Manager: Emma Burnl 🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟

Team Manager: Emma Burnley-Davies, 4th Year PDE

“I joined USEV in my first year at university because of my interest in eco-friendly design and now I know more about cars than I ever thought I would!

I am a 4th year PDE student, one of the rare few DMEM students to join the team. In my first year I had extremely limited knowledge of automotive engineering but I have worked on the carbon fibre body, been head of marketing (in my 2nd year), been to many events including the competition, and I worked on the chassis and steering wheel. Now after all this I am the extremely proud Head of USEV.

One of the best aspects about being in USEV is the familial vibe you get with the team particularly at the competition, we all look out for each other and help each other out. Events are one of my favourite things to do inside of USEV because you meet people from industry and realise that you’ve been talking about the vehicle for about 20 mins and surprise yourself with how much knowledge you’ve gained and how much you’ve done. Joining USEV was one of my best decisions at university it has challenged me and made me a more capable engineer and leader. I would highly recommend this experience to any student.”
🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟 Electrical Head: Ross Mc 🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟

Electrical Head: Ross McTeir, 5th Year EEE

"I’ve always been interested in mechanics even though I study Electronic and Electrical Engineering. USEV has given me the ability to harness all of my skills into a single project. In my first year I was a member of the Stability and Control sub-team. This involved designing and partially constructing a new and improved braking system for the car, the competition rules changed to require a pedal rather than a lever. This stepped through the initial design stage, to concepts, testing, construction, further testing and finally the penultimate assembly.

Since becoming Electrical Head I have been involved in many meetings and I feel as if my organisational and conversational skills have improved tenfold. These are things that cannot be learnt, they have to be developed through the process.

Long story short, if you want to be a part of something bigger and learn new skills in a way that involves you thinking on your feet, adapting, problem solving and improving, then give USEV a shot."
🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟 Mechanical Head: Ewan Sc 🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟

Mechanical Head: Ewan Scholefield, 2nd Year EME

"USEV is first and foremost about improving your technical skills and giving you real experience of working on engineering projects and from my experience it does this very well. Joining USEV was one of the best decisions I’ve made, not just because of the great friends I’ve made but because of the ability to apply what I’ve learned to something real. Not just some project or a pre designed component you make in the workshop for your course, but a project where you are making the designs and decisions yourself and can implement them in any way you want.

Although at times it may seem daunting, you have a team of competent and dedicated people ready to help you at every step that are just as eager as you to see them come to fruition.

When I first joined USEV I was in the Stability & Control team where I was redesigning and improving the vehicle's steering system. Through this I developed my skills in Solidworks CAD software  as well as lots of practical solutions for designs I can use in the future.

During all of this my communication skills and ability to work with people has increased significantly. I’ve gained a lot of confidence in my abilities, being able to comfortably put myself out there and contribute to the group.

Even in the short time that I’ve been the Mechanical Director, I have already greatly improved my leadership and organisational skills, which will only get better as time goes on.

These kind of things can only be gained through experience and really set you apart from other graduates in the competitive job market as well as prepare you for working in industry, regardless of where it is."
🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟 Treasurer: Aaron Weidman 🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟

Treasurer: Aaron Weidmann, 5th Year Mech Eng

"Looking back, joining USEV was an invaluable step in my career as an engineer which was unlike anything I had experienced from my Mechanical Engineering Degree. At a basic level I had the opportunity to brainstorm, design and validate components for the Clyde 2.0 in 2019 as a stability and control sub team member using various CAD packages. Here learning to talk to the technicians and understanding how manufacturability and budget plays into component design where some of the most valuable experiences. A deeper level which is great about USEV is that you are surrounded by more experienced students who are eager to help you. Teamwork plays a huge role, and most people end up staying in USEV because of the relationships they form.

The most important thing for me was that USEV rekindled my interest in engineering after a very theoretical first and second year and since joining I have never looked back. After being a mechanical sub-team lead last year, I now face a new challenge in a position as treasurer where I can hopefully be more involved in the general direction the team is going, and as such am excited for this new challenge in the coming year."
🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟 Marketing & Communicatio 🌟 MEET THE BOARD 🌟

Marketing & Communications Head: Cheryl Docherty, 5th Year EME

"I can honestly say that through USEV I have met some of the most dedicated and hardworking people I know, and the experiences I have had could not have been matched through traditional university.

I started USEV 3 years ago in my second year and I felt instantly welcomed by everyone in the team. I have been involved in both electronics (firstly powertrain, and then co-head) and body & aerodynamics, and have now moved into media/marketing to help promote and develop the society that has benefitted me so much over the past few years.

I would recommend anyone to join USEV, regardless of whether you are interested in automotive engineering, as your experiences here will be transferable to whatever area you end up being motivated by (I am personally now pursuing a career in biotech). It's a great opportunity to meet motivated people and have a good wee laugh in the lab. 😊"
